American Cockroach

Named after: Despite their name, they are native to Africa and the Middle East.

Identification: 1 1/2 ” – 3,” reddish-brown and oval in shape, often with a yellow figure-8 pattern on the back of their head

Seasonality: All seasons

Why they are in/near my home: They are typically found outdoors but they will come in to explore and scavenge. You could see them in flowerbeds and mulch due to their preference of warm, damp areas. They eat leaves, fungi, and algae. They will also eat crumbs and pet food.

Tips for homeowners: If there are any cracks beneath your door, they can easily crawl in with their flat bodies. Make sure all doors are sealed properly when closed. Remove any unnecessary cardboard or paper from your garage and remove all unnecessary food and water sources.

How Green Shield can help: Because cockroaches pick up germs on their feet, they spread disease and contaminate food, often bringing decaying matter or sewage with them. With cockroaches, it’s an ongoing process that involves looking for causes, looking for entry points, and then baiting areas where the cockroach eats. Often, insect growth regulators (IGR) are effective because it interferes with their ability to reproduce. And as always, exterior treatment around the foundation is important.

Weird fact: They are fast and can move fifty body lengths per second. This is the equivalent of a human running 210 mph!

German Cockroach

Named after: The bug was named by a Swede in the 18th century, but they were no more common in Germany than any other European country.

Identification: 1/2″ – 5/8,” brown with stripes on their back under the head.

Seasonality: All seasons

Why they are in/near my home: They are excellent at finding their way into the home in the most creative ways: shipping boxes, drink cartons, grocery bags, and anything secondhand. They prefer to live in moist, warm places and spread germs rapidly, crawling through decaying matter or sewage and spreading it around.

Tips for homeowners: Cleanliness is important when it comes to German cockroaches. Always take the trash out when full, clean up spills and crumbs, and sanitize often.

How Green Shield can help: Ridding a home of German Cockroaches probably takes more time and energy than any other pest. An extensive German Cockroach treatment specific to your home is important. Although every home is different, German Cockroaches love kitchens because of the food and water, but can be anywhere in a home. Because one female’s offspring can result in hundreds of thousands of offspring per year, it is important to stay on top of the issue with more frequent visits than quarterly.

Weird fact: They can develop a resistance to pesticides which why it is important to rotate products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are cockroaches a problem in homes and businesses?

They can contaminate food, kitchen surfaces, and household items as they search for food and water. They may also spread bacteria and trigger allergies or asthma symptoms in some individuals. Because they reproduce quickly and often hide in hard-to-reach areas, prompt treatment is important.

Common signs include seeing live ones, especially at night, finding droppings that resemble ground pepper or coffee grounds, noticing egg cases (oothecae), detecting a musty odor, and spotting shed skins in kitchens, bathrooms, or other warm, humid areas.

Our team begins with a thorough inspection to identify the species, locate hiding places, and determine the extent of the infestation. We then apply treatment using green and safe pesticides along with targeted control methods to eliminate and help reduce the risk of reinfestation.

They are attracted to food, moisture, and shelter. Dirty dishes, crumbs, garbage, pet food, leaking pipes, standing water, and cluttered storage areas can all create ideal conditions. They may also enter through cracks, drains, utility openings, or by hitchhiking inside boxes and secondhand items.

You can help prevent them by keeping kitchens and bathrooms clean, storing food in sealed containers, fixing plumbing leaks, emptying trash regularly, reducing clutter, and sealing gaps around doors, windows, and utility lines. Routine inspections and our professional services can help keep activity under control and protect your property.
